It can be difficult to select the correct desk pedestal for your workstation. The choice is so vast which can make it confusing. File drawer or drawers, lockable or not, width of the unit and then, the finish.
Desk End or Desk High Pedestal
A desk end pedestal or desk high pedestal would generally be part of a furniture collection. They can, of course, be purchased as standalone units.
Ultimately, the desk end pedestal was designed to fit neatly at the end of the desk. The idea being they offer the added bonus of additional work surface at the same height as the desk.
These are the best choice where optimal desktop work space is required in a larger room.
Options to choose from include drawers, filing drawers, a cupboard or a combination. For example: a shallow drawer with file drawer or a drawer with cupboard. There will often be lockable or non-lockable options.
Under Desk Pedestal and Mobile Pedestal
An under desk pedestal will usually be mobile. The idea with this model is that it can sit under the desk. It will not require additional floor space. Being mobile, on wheels, simply roll out if required. It can also be sat either under the left hand or right hand side of the desk dependent on preference.
The width of these can vary considerably. Generally they will be approximately 43cm or 435mm. For those with a smaller desk a narrow unit may be necessary. Depending on the width required the style and colour choices could be limited but you can find a reasonable variety of units around 390-400mm and some with a depth of 330mm.
As with desk end or desk high versions there are several design options – file drawers, multi drawer, a cupboard, lockable etc to choose from.
Final choice is the finish and once again there are a range of materials and colours to choose from.
Steel is robust and available in light grey, brown/beige or black. Many other colours including yellow, purple, blue, green etc can be ordered.
The choice of wood finishes is vast – beech, cherry, cappuccino, oak, light and dark walnuts. If purchasing a desk pedestal to coordinate with an existing desk then source a supplier offering colour samples to ensure a match.
